  2. Hosted The Best of Jazz on Radio 2 since 1967
  3. Hosted I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue since 1972
  4. Received honorary doctrates from Warwick (1987), Loughborough (1988), Durham (1989), Keele (1992), Hertford (1995) and de Montfort (1997)
  5. Recorded his hit Bad Penny Blues in 1956, the first British Jazz record to get into the Top 20
  6. "As we journey through life, discarding baggage along the way, we should keep an iron grip, to the very end, on the capacity for silliness. It preserves the soul from dessication."
  7. Died April 25, 2008 following surgery
