Sunday, 24 February 2008 7 things you can check before taking your car for its MOT

  1. Check all the lights are working
  2. Test that all tyres are good, the correct pressure and within tread limit
  3. Make sure all doors can be opened from the inside and outside of the car
  4. Test all seatbelts lock and recoil
  5. Check the handbreak holds the car, and ideally takes no more than nine clicks on the ratchet
  6. Test the breaks: whilst the car is in motion, take your hands off the steering wheel and break. The car should not only stop, but should not veer left or right
  7. Check that nothing is loose or sticking out from the car's bodywork
