- Hosted The Best of Jazz on Radio 2 since 1967
- Hosted I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue since 1972
- Received honorary doctrates from Warwick (1987), Loughborough (1988), Durham (1989), Keele (1992), Hertford (1995) and de Montfort (1997)
- Recorded his hit Bad Penny Blues in 1956, the first British Jazz record to get into the Top 20
- "As we journey through life, discarding baggage along the way, we should keep an iron grip, to the very end, on the capacity for silliness. It preserves the soul from dessication."
- Died April 25, 2008 following surgery
