Friday, 25 May 2007 7 solutions to a nightmare PC

One of our machines, 'Edison', has decided to go completely insane over the past few days and is bringing up random BSODs none of which seem to relate to one another, he also managed to corrupt our backup drive which contains all our photography RAW files. After 2 days of trying to source the problem, here are the 7 remaining solutions.

  1. Wait for a thunder storm and place him on the roof with a metal pole sticking out of his case
  2. Introduce him to a 12lb lump hammer
  3. Rename him 'Ping' as that is the only machine in our house that doesn't have 'issues'. - Guess which machine I'm using now ;)
  4. Try out a new water cooling solution. e.g. a fireman's hose or jet wash
  5. Take him on a visit to the top floor of 'The Telecom Tower' and test a revolutionary new gravity patch
  6. Rearrange his components with a mig welder
  7. Find a nice soft patch of earth and start digging!

Wednesday, 23 May 2007 7 haunted English pubs

  1. The Red Lion Avebury, Wiltshire - Haunted by the spectre of someone who was said to have been thrown down the well of the pub, (now covered with glass) hundreds of years ago. (We've actually stayed there, the only noise we heard were the howling banshees in the pub throwing their power... long story!)
  2. The Brushmakers Arms, Upham, Hampshire - The pub is said to be haunted by a man called Mr Chicket, who was robbed and murdered while staying at the pub centuries ago. He is seen as a shadow searching for his money.
  3. The Cross Keys, Harpenden, Hertfordshire - Ghostly monks have been seen at the bar area during the 1960's. An ecclesiastical guesthouse once stood on the site of the pub.
  4. The George and Dragon Hotel, West Wycombe, Buckinghamshire - A White Lady haunts the hotel, she is said to be a servant girl who was killed by spurned lovers at nearby West Wycombe caves (later associated with the Hell Fire Club). The pub is also said to be haunted by phantom footsteps.
  5. The White Hart, High Street, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire (a pub I used to frequent) - The White Hart is said to be haunted by the ghost of a young man who was murdered while fighting off a press gang. He is thought to have died at the bottom of the stairs, where the figure of a man has been seen with a look of terror on his face.
  6. The Black Lion, Northampton, Northamptonshire - Poltergeist activity has been observed in the pub in the past, including phantom footsteps and moving beer barrels.
  7. The Crown Hotel, Poole, Dorset - The hotel is haunted by the sound of children playing, and various other ghostly phenomena. In legend deformed twins were kept locked in an upstairs room.
