Wednesday, 13 June 2007 7 things about British nature I didn't know

  1. 1/5th of all bluebells in the world are located in Britain
  2. A green woodpecker is also known as a yaffle
  3. I now know what a red campion flower looks like
  4. The wren is the now most common bird in Britain
  5. If all bumble bees were wiped out, man would die in about 7 years from the disruption to the food chain and plant propogation.
  6. Otters store a layer of air between their outer and inner coat to act as insulation. This gets expelled when they swim and has to be 'rubbed' back in afterwards.
  7. Unlike most other butterflies, Peacock butterflies hibernate over winter.
