  1. Alice's adventures in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll : Banned in the province of Hunan, China (1931) for the portrayal of anthropomorphized animals acting on the same level as humans
  2. Doctor Zhivago - Boris Pasternak : Banned within the USSR until 1988 for its criticism of the Bolshevik Party
  3. Fanny Hill - John Cleland : Banned in the USA in 1821 for obscenity, then again in 1963. This was the last book ever banned in the USA
  4. Naked Lunch - William S Burroughs : Banned by Boston courts in 1962 for obscenity, but that decision was reversed in 1966 by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court
  5. 1984 - George Orwell : Banned by the Soviet Union in 1950, as Stalin understood that it was a satire based on his leadership
